Save the Blue Heart of Europe - A campaign for the protection of Balkan Rivers
Project Sites
The Balkan Peninsula is home to the last wild rivers of Europe—a "Blue Heart" that beats through diverse landscapes and untouched ecosystems.
While our campaign works across the entire region, we focus our efforts on key project sites that represent both the incredible beauty and the most urgent threats facing these waterways. From the Vjosa in Albania to the emerald reaches of the Neretva in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the threatened Komarnica Canyon in Montenegro, these rivers are more than just water; they are lifelines for biodiversity and local communities.
Each site tells a unique story of resilience and resistance. Explore our project sites below to learn about the specific ecological values of these rivers, the challenges they face from hydropower and exploitation, and the ongoing efforts to secure their permanent protection.
