Einladung zur Mavrovo Konferenz, 10. April in Skopje

For years, the projected construction of several hydropower plants in the Mavrovo National Park in Macedonia has been a controversially discussed issue on an international level. Up to now, discussions have mostly been held behind closed doors. We would like to change that. On April 10, we will host the first public conference on the future of Mavrovo National Park at which both opponents and proponents will be speaking. We are glad to invite you to this event.

For the first time, the discussion will be joined by representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), who is responsible for awarding the national park status. Together with representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), national and international environmental organisations, as well as scientists, they intend to discuss questions such as:

  • What kind of consequences for the national park would the projected construction of two large hydropower plants have? Do these plans risk Mavrovo’s status as a national park to be revoked?
  • What are the projected consequences for the park’s biodiversity, particularly for the Balkan Lynx?
  • What consequences would abandoning these projects have for Macedonia’s energy supply?
